I want to preface this post by saying this is not a spec and tech review. All opinions are my own and this is merely a budget-friendly laptop recommendation. Specifically focusing on the HP Chromebook 14.
I purchased my 3rd Chromebook back in June of 2019 because I love them so much. Well, I love the price and I really wanted an all-white laptop with a bigger screen and didn’t want to pay over $300 for it. *For reference, this is the HP Chromebook 14-ca021nr which means it’s also a touchscreen. A ~$300 TOUCHSCREEN laptop!? Come on now, you just can’t beat that!
Chromebooks are usually for people who browse and stream online. Although, there are offline capabilities and the option to enable Linux. (Which I’ve done for coding purposes.) With G-suite you can do pretty much everything you can do with windows office suite; Drive for storage, Docs for word processing, Sheets for spreadsheets, Slides for presentations, Forms to conduct surveys, and Sites for web site collaboration. I finished my college career using a Chromebook, so it’s very capable.
With most new Chromebooks you also have the capability to download android apps via the play store. The possibilities are endless y’all! And as far as memory storage goes, they usually come in either 32gb or 64gb; but that can be expanded using a microSD card, which I’ll be doing. The battery life on this beauty is awesome! It advertises as 11hrs and they weren’t lying! Most Chromebooks have a battery life of ~11hrs. That’s a full workday y’all! Charging doesn’t take long either.
I also love the fact that they aren’t susceptible to viruses or malware. That was a major component when I was looking for a budget-friendly laptop. Another factor I was looking for was lifespan (how long until the laptop is unable to push updates and begins to slow down). Chromebooks have a lifespan of five years. For comparison purposes, MacBooks have a lifespan of 3-5 years before they start to slow down.
So if you’re in need of a laptop but not looking to invest more than $300, I highly suggest this Chromebook. They come in all shapes and sizes, various brands and prices, and have tons of reviews online. They got me through my whole college career and then some. Below are some other Chromebooks I recommend.
